If you look around at what national media outlets are saying and take the common headlines to form your opinion, you probably won't come away feeling very high on the Phoenix Suns for next season. But although thinking the Suns are a true playoff contender likely remains far-fetched, there's still one silver lining most seem to be missing right now, and it involves Jalen Green being put in an excellent position to succeed.
It's no secret that Phoenix had nearly no choice but to trade away Kevin Durant this summer. The writing was on the wall, and the band-aid was officially ripped off on June 22 when it was announced that he'd be dealt to Houston. Some sort of trade was inevitable, it was always just going to be about what the Suns were able to get back.
And sure, it's probably realistic to say Phoenix didn't come away as the clear winner from the deal. But the most valuable piece they did get in return from the Rockets was unquestionably the young Jalen Green.
Number zero from Houston arrives in The Valley with four years of professional playing experience under his belt, and now he will have his first change of scenery since entering the league back in 2021. That alone can be reason for players to feel refreshed and come out looking a bit different in a new season, but I believe there's more to it than just that.
Devin Booker will help with Jalen Green's continued development
Green was very clearly the featured guard in Houston for several years. In fact, he scarcely played with another high-level option in the backcourt. Fred VanVleet and Kevin Porter Jr. were probably his best two guard teammates he's had in his career so far when you factor in talent and experience.
Now, Jalen will be gaining the privilege of heading to the practice gym every day and competing against the likes of Devin Booker. Number one in Phoenix remains among the best shooting guards in the association, and he will likely serve to be a fantastic influence on Green.
Those two will be sharpening each other all offseason and all throughout the coming regular season as well. Is that going to turn Jalen Green into a perennial All-NBA player? Probably not, but it's not unreasonable at all to think it will refine his skills and make him a more effective player than he's been in the past.
I think it's entirely possible we will see a Jalen Green next season that's overall sharper, more bought in on defense, and improved as a decision-maker. Being around Devin Booker is going to inspire greatness, and Suns fans might be in for a pleasant surprise.
