What a fantastic season Collin Gillespie is having for the Phoenix Suns so far. The pinnacle surely being named the first-quarter MVP by ourselves.
Alright so maybe snagging a starting spot in The Valley was a bigger deal, but you get the idea. Gillespie has been amazing for the Suns and will surely be brought back next season.
Suns won't have starting spot for Gillespie when Jalen Green returns.
But what is the franchise going to do once Jalen Green returns from injury? We only saw him for a game and some change before he was once again sidelined with a hamstring issue, but he looked electric.
The general consensus is that he won't be seen again until after Christmas Day, but that time is rapidly approaching. Once he is fit, there's no way he is coming off the bench behind a guy in Gillespie who is on a minimum deal this season.

Green was the best player they supposedly got back in the Kevin Durant trade after all, a fact that the former Suns' superstar didn't forget when they matched up again recently. Dillon Brooks might think otherwise, but the reality is Green will get played like the star the Suns hope he can be.
Which represents a problem for Gillespie, and also head coach Jordan Ott. Of all the players who encapsulate what coach Ott is trying to do on the defensive end, Brooks and Gillespie are his two guys.
You can add center Mark Williams to that list as well, but he will never be in competition with Gillespie for minutes. One potential solution would be dropping Grayson Allen for Gillespie, but that won't work for several reasons.
Allen is capable of staying with bigger scorers that Gillespie cannot, while his 3-point shooting (to his credit Gillespie has also been hot from deep this season) is a powerful weapon.
Really though we've seen Allen drop to the bench in favor of a point guard in Tyus Jones in the past, and that ended in disaster. You just can't play Booker, Green and Gillespie big minutes together.
Which is a problem for coach Ott to solve. We know Gillespie will have no problem reverting back to a role off the bench, it is where he began the season after all. But the Suns truly do have something with him as a starter, and they've reaped the rewards.
This is a good problem to have, because it shows that the Suns have more depth than anybody could have imagined, and have been competitive too. They have to find a long-term role for Gillespie though, and one that does not clash with Green when he returns.
