The Phoenix Suns have a franchise star in the palm of their hands: Devin Booker. They’ve tried to build around him before, but it didn’t work out. They made the NBA Finals, added other stars, and ended up having to blow up the team. But as the Suns continue to push forward, they must avoid what is happening with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors right now.
It seems like the Warriors are comfortable letting Curry ride off into the sunset. They know they aren’t competing, and they’re kind of okay with that. They want to focus on the next era, instead of Curry. Phoenix may be a long way away from that reality. But the truth remains: The Suns need to keep trying to build around Booker.
In no world can the Suns become complacent, because as soon as they do, they could end up like the Warriors and Curry – who is still one of the best players in the NBA.
Suns cannot let Devin Booker turn into this version of the Stephen Curry era
Recent reports have indicated that the Warriors are more focused on the post-Curry years than right now. They want to build the next era of the Warriors rather than giving up assets to build around Curry.
And if you read the tea leaves, that’s what it seems like is happening. After failing to get LeBron James, the Warriors’ offseason now seems like a complete dud.
Golden State didn’t add anyone. It re-signed Draymond Green to a one-year contract, and now, if it wanted to, it could get off Green, Curry, and Jimmy Butler’s contracts by next summer.
Rather than shelling out more assets to try to restructure things around Curry – still a top 10 player – the Warriors seem content with letting him ride off into the sunset.
Curry is 28 years old. Booker is only 29. But the Suns aren’t exactly close to winning a championship right now. They have done a good job building out a foundation, but they cannot wait too long to find their window.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander isn’t going anywhere. Victor Wembanyama isn’t going anywhere. If the Suns want to win with Booker leading the way, they need to find a way to get through those guys. They can’t wait them out.
Phoenix needs to start thinking about its next big move. How can the Suns significantly improve around Booker? What assets can they pool together to make a deal? How can they get assets to then flip them and bring in a co-star?
The Suns need to be proactive. They can’t let what is happening to Curry happen to Booker.
