Suns must wave goodbye to two players this offseason for future roster improvement

They have to leave to create roster space.

The only way the Phoenix Suns are going to improve their roster this offseason is by bringing back Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin.

Outside of that it will be about finding value around the fringes of their rotation as they did so brilliantly in 2025-26 to try and push for another playoff appearance.

Suns must ditch Amir Coffey and Isaiah Livers for future flexibility

Which is why a pair of end of the bench guys in Amir Coffey and Isaiah Livers have to be let walk this summer. A tough break for both given they are consummate professionals, and both will also feel like they could actually help the Suns if given the opportunity.

Coffey can be an excellent 3-point shooter on his day and the 41.7 percent he managed on 1.5 attempts once he landed in The Valley actually represented a career high. The 16 game sample size is small, but there is enough there offensively to believe he can reappear with another team in future.

Coffey would have a higher chance of sticking around if the Suns traded one or both of Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale, as he can replicate some of what they do. The smart money is on Coffey being gone long before Phoenix makes a decision on those two.

You have to feel sorry for Livers as well. There’s clearly an NBA rotation player in there, injuries have just gotten in the way. He even had some flashes with the Detroit Pistons, they just couldn’t wait around to see what he could become and were right to cut ties with him. So too will the Suns despite the fact Livers is an intriguing defensive piece.

He has a similar body type to Dillon Brooks and is capable of guarding multiple positions. Those thicker frame forwards are necessary for head coach Jordan Ott’s defensive schemes, which is why Livers was brought to The Valley in the first place. It hasn’t worked out, but it was a worthwhile experiment.

If anything he is the kind of player who can go toe-to-toe with the physicality of the Oklahoma City Thunder and their forwards, but we unfortunately won’t be seeing that anytime soon.

Moving on from these two players is necessary so that the Suns have more roster flexibility when necessary. Which they will need if they are serious about winning a playoff series this decade.
