After the Los Angeles Clippers dismissed Chris Paul last week, the Phoenix Suns now have a prime opportunity to sign him and re-unite him with Devin Booker in what will be his final professional season. The Suns fanbase would undoubtedly be overjoyed to see the duo that took this franchise to the NBA Finals back together, and frankly, they should never have been separated in the first place.
NBA Insider Jake Fischer reported that the Suns had interest in Paul before the season started. He writes: League sources say Paul had interest from teams such as the Bucks, Knicks, Mavericks and Suns, but he was determined to stay as near to his family as possible even after playing (and starting) all 82 games in his lone season as a San Antonio Spur. So with that in mind, why not try to bring him back?
For Phoenix, the fit makes almost too much sense. This is a team that has quietly rebuilt itself around toughness, defensive intensity, and high-IQ basketball. Dillon Brooks has reshaped the Suns’ culture, Booker is still the offensive anchor, and their supporting cast has leaned into a scrappy, disciplined identity that’s carried them through a strong opening to the season.
The only thing Phoenix truly lacks is a steady, offensive-focused veteran guard who can control the tempo and give Booker more freedom to play off the ball when the Suns need it most. Paul still does that extremely well.
The Suns would benefit from adding Chris Paul again
Even in his age 40 season, Paul remains one of the league’s best decision-makers. He was among the leaders in the NBA in assist-to-turnover ratio last season and still knows how to orchestrate an offense without dominating possessions. That’s exactly the kind of presence Phoenix has missed since he left.
The Suns' offense has been solid but not always organized, especially when teams speed them up or force them into late-clock situations. Paul's arrival would immediately give Phoenix the kind of stabilizing force they need.
There’s also the emotional and cultural angle. Booker has spoken many times about Paul’s impact on his career and his growth as a professional. Bringing CP3 back for one final ride would energize both the locker room and the fanbase. Adding Paul wouldn’t be purely a nostalgia move, it would also be a practical one.
If Phoenix is serious about making a real postseason push, this is exactly the type of veteran addition contenders make. CP3 doesn’t need to play 30 minutes a night or carry scoring responsibility, he just needs to stabilize a team that already has the pieces to win. And at the end of the day, this would put a smile on everyone's faces.
