The Phoenix Suns made some big changes to the direction of their franchise this offseason, and it was a move that was well received by the fanbase in The Valley. This was a roster that needed to get younger and attempt to recoup some draft picks so as to rebuild their roster from the ground up around Devin Booker, and the front office responded in the best way that they could.
Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal were sent packing, with Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green and three rookies coming to Phoenix in their place. The team even went and raided Europe for Nigel Hayes-Davis, and the 30-year-old who is getting a second chance at life in the league is going to be a secret weapon for the organization next season.
Mat Ishbia's latest social media post a massive blunder.
Yet for all of the good work that has gone on to reset the Suns and begin their long ascend back to what they hope is the top of the mountain once more, owner Mat Ishbia's latest comments on X have not helped matters. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Ishbia was taking to a popular podcast to say all of the right things about the future of the team. But this... this just looks bad.
I'm not worried about what the so-called experts think. They had us as a title contender the past two years and were wrong then. We're focused on making our fans proud by playing great as a team and building a brand of basketball that's tough and gritty. https://t.co/o9ysQlxW6r

Go ahead and sift through the comments people have left underneath Ishbia's tweet, it won't take you long to get a sense of what people are feeling on this one. Of all of the noise that is sent Ishbia and the front office's way, why he chose this moment to pipe up given how bad the last two seasons have been is baffling.
This is the same guy who once said 26 other General Managers would gladly trade positions with the Suns, and now they're paying Beal for the next five seasons to play basketball elsewhere. What Ishbia is also essentially saying is that the experts were wrong to think his franchise could be so good in the past - they won only 36 games last season - and he'll prove them wrong again this time out.
We actually do believe they could end up being better than advertised, but it is not going to be by a lot. This also puts unnecessary pressure on guys like Green to excel in what will be his first season with the team, while he may also be forced to play the point guard position as well. Then there are the rookies, who should be taking to the court with zero expectations.
This is just a tone deaf move by Ishbia, and the Suns should instead focus on quietly building out their roster near the bottom of the Western Conference. There is no need to go public on thinking they'll be better than the "experts" are predicting. Real G's move in silence and all that, and Ishbia would do well to remember that advice when the Suns are struggling next season. This will be brought up then.
