The Phoenix Suns are a team that is about to go through some upheaval this offseason, although it is hoped there will be a positive outcome. They're close to securing a new head coach, although even that process hasn't been easy thanks to Tom Thibodeau's unlikely firing from the New York Knicks.
Why that can be felt in The Valley is because Johnnie Bryant - a finalist for the Suns' head coaching position - has a history in New York and could be swayed back there. Besides, many feel that the other individual in the running for the role in Jordan Ott - a current colleague of Bryant as both are assistants with the Cleveland Cavaliers - has the inside track because of his Michigan State links.
New suitor for Kevin Durant is a dream scenario for the Suns.
Then there is the small issue of Kevin Durant, and what exactly to do with the 36-year-old this summer. Already there have been rumors that his trade value is on the slide, but that may only be when it comes to dealing with the Houston Rockets. They have a young and exciting core, and rightly don't want to give up too much of that future to secure a closer with injury history.
But according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports - as part of his "Burns & Gambo" show with that media outlet - has mentioned the San Antonio Spurs as a possible suitor for Durant's services this summer. This is excellent news for a whole host of reasons - and given Suns' owner Mat Ishbia has said he would always help Durant find a place he wanted to go next - that is taken care of here too.
Durant played college in Texas, and the idea of teaming up with Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox is surely an enticing one. The kind of "Big 3" that the Suns most certainly were not in pairing Durant with franchise cornerstone Devin Booker, plus Bradley Beal. Right away that situation would given Durant a better chance to win another ring.
A generational big man plus an elite point guard, as well as some young pieces with upside. From the perspective of the Suns, they would get a whole lot of stuff from the Spurs that would immediately make them interesting again. They would surely have to ask for current Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, who would be an excellent fit next to Booker.
He would also fill the need of floor general the franchise has lacked since Chris Paul left, and he would come in a much more aggressive and athletic package. Devin Vassell would also likely be involved, plus a number of draft picks to get a deal over the line. The Suns might covet a big man - and San Antonio may not be the place to get it - but they would then have more flexibility to go and get one.
If nothing else another interested party is going to drive the price for Durant's services in the right direction again. It might also jolt the Rockets into realizing they are a closer away from coming out of the Western Conference, even if the Oklahoma City Thunder look like a dynasty in the making right now. The perfect update to get ahead of the NBA Draft and a busy period for the organization.
