The Phoenix Suns have officially traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. But while the KD news has obviously dominated the news cycle, it may not be the final domino to fall for the Suns this June. With Phoenix holding four picks in Wednesday's NBA Draft, they're in a prime position to continue to reshape their roster.
When the 2025 NBA Draft begins, the Suns will own the number 10, 29, 52, and 59th picks. We know that Phoenix has an interest in continuing to retool their roster and reshaping the supporting cast around Devin Booker. The Suns are finally free from Kevin Durant's huge contract, but they will still want to pursue more long-term flexibility, and that could come in the form of younger players on more affordable contracts.
Being able to hold claim to four picks in a single draft is certainly a rare luxury. Especially for the team that had the highest payroll in the NBA during the 2024-25 season, and appeared to be stuck in the mud when it came to their financial dealings not too long ago. The Suns will have a special opportunity here.
Phoenix could create more flexibility by trading their draft picks
When it comes to the 10th overall pick, Phoenix is going to have a real chance to land a rotation player that can make a legitimate impact on this team. With that being said, don't be surprised if the Suns decide to get even more aggressive. They could easily package the 10th pick along with the 29th pick, and potentially if even include more assets, to move up a few more spots if they have a prospect they really like that's set to go in the first few picks.
There's also probably a world in which the Suns opt to do the opposite, and trade back to turn one of their picks into several. The idea here being that Phoenix currently has a pretty thin roster. Getting a few more second round picks might not sound like a slam dunk move, but when you consider that the Suns could use more cost efficient contracts on their roster, it's far from a bad consideration to make.
Whatever Phoenix does decide to do is going to say a lot about their future plans. The front office has a lot more options available to them now than they did a week ago, and they're armed with enough draft capital to make something happen.
