The Phoenix Suns trading for Miles Bridges has rightly divided the fanbase, but one thing we can all agree on was that it was an overpay for his services.
The franchise doing what it can to replace the productivity of Royce O’Neale and Grayson Allen in other ways, but adding that unprotected first round pick in 2033 still makes no sense.
Suns draft picks beginning to hit makes this even worse
Watching the front office throw picks at trades to try and remain competitive around Devin Booker has been painful to watch, even more so now that some of their own selections are actually starting to work out. Ryan Dunn might ultimately go down as a miss, but Oso Ighodaro is now a rotation player in The Valley.
It is hard to know how much credit the Suns deserve for landing Khaman Maluach as he was technically drafted 10th overall in 2025 by the Houston Rockets. Many have put forward the idea that Phoenix asked Houston to select Maluach before adding him to the Kevin Durant trade, which would make sense. Either way they have him in the building now, and he looked to have made some serious strides at Summer League.
This year’s draft saw the organization move up into the end of the first round to select Koa Peat, a decision which again cost them draft capital but which early on looks like a decision that could work out. Like Maluach, Peat was shut down out in Las Vegas in anticipation for next season.
Best case scenario in two seasons time these will be three of the top eight players on the roster around Devin Booker, and this has only been made possible using draft picks that the Suns seem content to just give away. They have an owner, General Manager and head coach who are all aligned in what this franchise needs, it’s just a shame they don’t have more draft capital to bring their vision to life as a result of some needless deals.
The Suns need to do all they can to try and win now around Booker, which is why they have traded away future picks wherever possible in an attempt to get better now.
Only that strategy clearly has not worked, whereas there are already signs of life from Maluach and Peat. Even using these picks to package together for another star down the road would at least make sense, but instead they are being thrown into the Bridges deal. As Booker ages this will lead to a tough reality check.
