The Phoenix Suns have done a wonderful job across the last 12 months of trying to find affordable point guards who can play in big spots for the team.
Collin Gillespie being the best example of this, with Jordan Goodwin not far behind. Jamaree Bouyea was also helpful to this group last season, and all three figure to be back for 2026-27 (Bouyea's one-year deal is not guaranteed which may be relevant down the road).
Suns still lack truly special point guard to take group to next level
Employing one of the 20 best floor generals in the league is not easy, and not since Chris Paul have the franchise have anybody who comes close to that level. Yet despite making many impressive moves to improve their roster, the front office seems content to rotate in good but not great guards alongside Devin Booker.
All three guys mentioned above deserve to be in Phoenix and are capable of helping on any given night. But this cast of guys ensures that Booker still has to set others up from time-to-time and be more of a facilitator.
Not helping matters either is the insistence of the organization to have a player like Jalen Green still on the roster. His fit next to Booker just does not work, and until they come to a long-term solution on what to do with him, the Suns won't be able to find a point guard of the future.
You would think they would have learned their lesson from the Tyus Jones debacle, even if others around the league don't appear to have been paying attention. There's a reason Jones back then or Gillespie and Goodwin now were available to Phoenix on the kind of contracts they brought them back on.
They're overqualified backups in a lot of locations, but expecting them to play and produce like starters across an entire season is a big ask as well. Gillespie in particular was one of the Suns' best players period last season, but the playoffs exposed the fragilities of having him in such a position.
There is no easy fix here, and it is not like the Suns can go and get somebody of high quality "on Booker's timeline" either. Ja Morant was not the answer, although Dejounte Murray would be an interesting player to target. The draft is the obvious way to get the right player in the building, but the Suns seem happy to constantly trade away first round picks.
This group will still be competitive next season and Gillespie/Goodwin were great players to bring back to help the cause. But it doesn't solve their problem at the position.
