The Bradley Beal disaster is a moment in Phoenix Suns history that is not worth revisiting. Only because of the fact he was bought out by the franchise and so still has part of his salary stuck to the franchise's salary cap, it will continue to haunt them for years to come.

Suns can't be salary cap team for years to come because of Beal mistake

When Beal's contract was bought out it was stretched over a longer period of time so as to be easier to swallow, although it remains an ugly reason. Just shy of $20 million owed to the 32-year-old between now and the 2029-30 season. That means a lot less cap space to outright sign players.

Which is why it is important to either extend Mark Williams on a team-friendly deal, or else execute a sign-and-trade. The need to bring back both Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin has also increased, as the Suns own the early Bird Rights of both players and so can go over the number normally allowed to have them in Phoenix next season.

The Beal issue may ease up some two years from now, when Dillon Brooks could be off the books and Jalen Green has a player option on his current deal. With how much the Suns have come to love and rely on Brooks however, the smarter bet is on him coming back on a deal that works for everybody.

But with the front office operating under such tight margins because of this dreadful decision, it is no wonder names like Ja Morant are being brought up as potential "Get Out of Jail Free" cards to fix this situation. There may also come a time when Devin Booker realizes that the Suns have no more ways around having to pay Beal, and so asks out himself.

We have not reached that point yet, but it is easy to see how the Beal trade ended up being even worse than swinging for Kevin Durant. At least they got both Brooks and Green back for the ageing superstar, and were not left with a hefty wage bill having been forced to cut him either.

This is the main stumbling block towards contending once again, and it is not going to go away.

With the Suns not likely to pivot the other way and embrace a rebuild either, taking on more bad contracts for draft picks at a time when they are as valuable as ever, Beal appears to have them stuck.
