The first round of the NBA Draft is almost upon us, and the Phoenix Suns won't be featuring. Right? That's the situation currently, with the franchise holding only the 47th pick which won't be selected until Wednesday, and a whole host of options both near and far to consider.
Suns could move into first round with late draft day move
Buried in the latest notes from Jake Fischer was the tasty morsel that if the organization were to move into the first round, then Arizona freshman Koa Peat is a top target for the Suns to try and select.
Huh?
Quite how Phoenix plans on getting a first rounder at this late stage is unclear, and Fischer certainly didn't offer any avenues either. But the fact he brought it up in the cryptic way that he did lots of other information suggests that this is for real.
Fischer also revealed that he believes the trio of the Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks are all open to moving out of the first round altogether given their current roster construction, which could be a clue as to how the Suns can get involved.
Expanding on that further and he also expects plenty of movement between picks 20-30 as those selections get closer, which again points to the Suns appearing at a time when nobody expected them to.
For this front office to get a first at a time when they are committed to running it back would be excellent business, although if it means losing the 47th pick some fans may be fearful. It is not spoken about often in The Valley, but in the last few years the franchise has had more luck with second rounders (Toumani Camara, Oso Ighodaro) than firsts (Ryan Dunn).
No matter where they ultimately end up on the draft board and on what day, this continued approach of selecting young and cheap players to build around Devin Booker, Dillon Brooks and to a lesser extend Jalen Green is working.
They made the playoffs last season and still have real trade assets in Grayson Allen or Royce O'Neale. Depending on who the Suns pick, one of those veterans could soon be on the move to create minutes for their younger players.
A twist nobody saw coming in Phoenix so late in the day, and further proof that their front office have learned from their mistakes of the past. An exciting couple of days potentially ahead.
