You know it is that time of the year when seemingly unfounded trade rumors begin to surface regarding players and teams that have never been mentioned together before.
So it was no surprise to see the Phoenix Suns rumored as a potential landing spot for star big man Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings as they lurch from one disaster to the next.
Suns would be repeating Kevin Durant sized mistake with Sabonis.
Surely the only reason the Suns are being mentioned as possible suitors is because they are no longer above the apron, and have a history under owner Mat Ishbia of making splashy moves?
But anybody who has watched this team, and just as importantly their front office, since Durant was traded to Houston will know that their approach has changed.
Ishbia has spoken about building a roster slowly and without cutting corners, and although it is early days he has been true to his word.
The Suns and Wizards have been mentioned as potential suitors for Domantas Sabonis, in addition to the Bulls, per @sam_amick.

If Phoenix were to pursue Sabonis, a trade package would likely revolve around Jalen Green and Mark Williams. Washington could offer expiring salary,… https://t.co/8hC9CXBZi4
Then there is General Manager Brian Gregory, who can already take a victory lap given he was expected to fail miserably, and who has to this point made smart moves to improve the team.
The deal that presented the most risk, but which has also paid off in a big way, was bringing in center Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets. A trade that the Los Angeles Lakers continue to regret not following through on.
Williams is currently extension eligible and turning in a career year in The Valley, so why exactly would they want Sabonis? When Jusuf Nurkic was manning the paint it would have been a no-brainer, but times have changed in Phoenix.
Any trade for Sabonis would likely have to include both Williams and Jalen Green, and not only is that too much to give up right now, Sabonis currently has a partially torn meniscus, we haven't even see this Suns roster fully healthy.
Green has featured in two games, while Williams has proven he can stay on the court and he has made a massive difference already.
Head coach Jordan Ott deserves so much credit for using guys like Williams and Dillon Brooks to create a defensive mindset, and he could surely get the best out of Sabonis on that end too.
But the prospect of gutting another group when it hasn't even had a chance to show us what it can be for a 29-year-old with plenty of miles on the body would be a disaster.
The Suns are being used here because they're re-tooling and have no picks coming down the road either. They're an obvious choice to go after Sabonis given their history as well.
Only if you pay attention to what is going on in Phoenix, you will know that they have no interest in Sabonis and are building the roster out in a way Ishbia and company have never tried before.
