Will the Suns make the playoffs this season (2024 NBA playoff odds suggest Suns are a lock)
By Peter Dewey
Just how massive was the Phoenix Suns’ win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night?
Well, it skyrocketed the team’s odds to make the playoffs to -500 at DraftKings Sportsbook, and the Suns may be in a position to miss the play-in tournament this season, as they have one more meeting with the Pels and are just a game back of them in the standings.
With the Western Conference featuring so many teams jumbled up in the play-in picture, who does Phoenix stack up?
Suns’ odds to make the playoffs in 2023-24 season
After defeating the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night, the Suns are -500 to make the playoffs, good for an implied probability of 83.33 percent. As things stand right now in the West, the Suns would host the No. 7 vs. No. 8 play-in tournament game and would have two chances to win one game to claim a playoff berth.
Phoenix is also just one game back of New Orleans for the No. 6 seed and 1.5 games back of Dallas for the No. 5 seed. Landing there would guarantee the team a playoff spot without going through the play-in.
Here’s how the Western Conference play-in tournament picture looks with the latest odds on Tuesday, April 2:
- Sacramento Kings: -135 (implied probability of 57.54 percent)
- Los Angeles Lakers: -125 (implied probability of 55.56 percent)
- Dallas Mavericks: -10000 (implied probability of 99.01 percent)
- Golden State Warriors: +225 (implied probability of 30.77 percent)
- New Orleans Pelicans: -900 (implied probability of 90.00 percent)
Of all of these teams (and Phoenix), two teams will have to miss the postseason. It seems like oddsmakers expect those squads to be among Golden State, Los Angeles, and Sacramento, but a lot can change over the final days of the 2023-24 regular season.
Should you bet on the Suns to make the playoffs?
Betting on the Suns at this price is now worth it since the team is heavily favored to make the playoffs, but there is a chance that this number will shrink and provide some betting value.
Phoenix has the hardest remaining schedule in the NBA, per Tankathon, including matchups with New Orleans and Sacramento. Depending upon how those shake out, the Suns could find themselves in a fight for a play-in spot.
With Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal all on the roster, it’s hard to see the Suns failing to make the playoffs. Still, we’ve seen crazier things happen in the NBA. For now, Suns fans are hoping Phoenix can crack the top six to avoid any play-in tournament variability.
