Which accolade would increase Devin Booker's aura more?

What is Devin Booker missing to take him to that final level?

In the NBA, is it better to be cool or successful? Allen Iverson was cool - perhaps the coolest to ever do it - but he never won a championship. There was a deserved MVP and a level of influence on future generations of fans and players alike, but he never got over the hump.

Then there were role player to the stars Robert Horry - who certainly isn't the first player who comes to mind when you think of effortless cool - but who did win a ridiculous seven NBA Championships. None as a star player though so how about Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks? Winner of possibly the toughest title of all time. Beloved in Dallas? Yes. Successful? You bet. But cool? Erm...

Which begs the question - which does more for Devin Booker's aura - an MVP award or a championship win?

As you're well aware by now Booker's stock has risen considerably this summer, as a result of a gold medal Olympic run that has spawned an "I'll Do It" movement. Booker cleverly capitalized on the moment as well, releasing a fascinating behind the scenes look at Team USA's gold medal win and subsequent celebrations.

His aura is at an all-time high, and not just because he left the club on the night the team won gold on a push bike. There has been a shift in how Booker is now viewed, and it is largely because of his willingness to accept a role with Team USA, while also being out there as a starter and at crunch time. It doesn't hurt that superstars like Stephen Curry and Anthony Edwards gravitated towards him too.

But if you were told now that Booker could only either win an MVP or a championship from now until his career ended, which would you prefer to see him win? That question might come down to age, as younger fans may point to a title as the ultimate goal. Which it is.

But a strange thing happens as you get older - as this writer who has sped into his thirties can attest - whereby financial security and what you mean to a fanbase become if not more important, then goals that you can at least understand a lot more. Booker is beloved in The Valley - he might just go down as the greatest Suns player of all time - and an MVP trophy would add more validation to that.

Steve Nash a fascinating example to introduce at this point. He's in the running right now for the best Sun ever, and he has a pair of MVP trophies. No Larry O'Brien to his name though, but Suns fans love him either way. In a lot of ways it was his failure to win it all - while also clearly giving his all to the cause in Phoenix - that draws fans to him even more.

A bit like Reggie Miller, who stayed with the Indiana Pacers his whole career and never even made the NBA Finals. In private Miller may admit that he should have gone elsewhere to chase a ring, but he probably hasn't had to put his hand in his pocket for a meal in Indiana since retiring. Tough to put a price on that level of adulation.

So if we're talking about pure aura, then surely the prospect of Booker being named MVP while putting up something like 28 points a night alongside Kevin Durant is the peak right? Sustained playoff appearances on top of that, but the individual trophy to rubber stamp what is fast becoming a Hall of Fame career.

But hold up a minute. The Suns have never won a championship before. Can you even imagine what that would be like, and with Booker a key part of it. If somehow he was forced to become the third fiddle behind Durant and even Bradley Beal (we know, we know... humor us), but brought the chip to The Valley. That's immortality right there.

Whatever way you look at this, the reality is Booker's reputation seriously increased in Paris. No longer thought of behind Jayson Tatum and even Jamal Murray, the prospect of him winning either MVP or a championship is by no means a crazy one. He'd take a championship - that's the essence of I'll do it right there - but the reality is there's no wrong answer here, only personal preference.
