The Phoenix Suns have continued to add players to the back end of their roster throughout the offseason, as the front office attempt to leave no stone unturned in trying to get better. Last season's playoff hammering at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves leaving a sour taste in the mouth.
We've spoken at length about the guys the Suns have impressively managed to add - one might already be surplus to requirements in The Valley - but the organization have continued picking up unsigned players to add to the team.
Which is how Frank Kaminsky has ended up back in Phoenix.
Kaminsky was of course part of the roster that made it all the way to the 2021 NBA Finals, but spent last season in Serbia. At 31-years-old and having failed to ignite his professional career after a memorable stint in college with Wisconsin, few would have expected Kaminsky to finish out his career away from the NBA.
The Suns bringing him back in for another look during training camp is a smart move though, because he's familiar with Devin Booker and the franchise and was around for their best days so far this decade. Vibes alone are no reason to sign a player, but there's no question that Kaminsky seems popular with the fanbase and also fellow players.
Quite whether he'll stick or not is another story - but given this development came out of nowhere - it's a swing by the team with zero downside. It's not like he didn't know his role prior to heading overseas, but Kaminsky is sure to grab onto any slim opportunity he might get in Phoenix with both hands.
In 95 regular season appearances for the team he could only manage 34.4 percent from 3-point range, a number that would simply have to improve if he hopes to carve out a role here. Shooting at his size is his best attribute, while the 20 percent he converted in 10 postseason appearances likely explains why he was allowed to head to Europe in the first place.
The Suns wouldn't need Kaminsky to ever touch the court in the playoffs - even that is too outrageous to suggest as a best case scenario - but he could provide some veteran help during parts of the regular season. That's if he even makes the roster, as he is going to have his work cut out to do so.
The franchise has brought Bol Bol back for a second season - and if they're comfortable giving him some more time to bring his one-of-one offensive skills to this group - then they could do a lot worse than see if Kaminsky have any juice left. Averages last season of 9.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists aren't anything to get excited about, but he wouldn't have to do any more than that.
Kaminsky would be something like the 14th man on this roster if he does stick, and if you're getting any kind of meaningful contribution from that spot then you're doing well. On a personal level for him though, it may be a way back into the league for one last shot if things don't work out with the Suns. A win-win for everybody, and a nice training camp story to see as well.
