3. Sign defensive big men
There is speculation that Jusuf Nurkic could exit the Suns during the summer as he enters the final year of his four-year, $70 million deal. He proved to be a smart offensive asset in his first year with the team. But he remains a defensive liability, which was further exposed by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the playoffs.
This gives Phoenix a shot at signing defensive-minded bigs to aid their Big 3. With Vogel potentially staying, the management should seize the moment and add valuable defenders in the frontcourt. The head coach's system is known to be most effective when there are big men who can defend on his roster. In 2020, the Los Angeles Lakers won mainly because they had JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard aiding Anthony Davis in the frontcourt.
Back when Vogel was with the Indiana Pacers, Roy Hibbert anchored the team's defense and earned himself two All-Star selections. Aside from Hibbert, David West and Danny Granger excelled on the defensive end while playing for the coach.
The Suns must take a similar approach and prioritize signing defensive-minded big men. They could try and explore signing Andre Drummond to a minimum deal and secure a solid big man this summer.
