Phoenix Suns veteran on pace to shatter this franchise record

A Suns record that's stood for two decades could fall this year.

With 563 made 3-pointers through 39 games so far in 2025-26, the Phoenix Suns are once again on pace to break the franchise record for team 3-pointers made in a season — albeit just.

The Suns team record for 3-point makes in a season set back in 2005-06 — when they led the league with 837 makes from beyond the arc — has fallen for five straight seasons. As the league emphasizes putting up more 3-point looks, that’s not exactly a surprise. The shooters today are better than ever, and that mixed with the sheer volume of long-range shots creates a recipe for records being broken.

Starting in 2020-21 up through last season, the Suns have made 940, 951, 1,001, 1,020 and 1,176 shots from long range, breaking the record in each subsequent season.

This season’s team is pacing to make 1,183 triples, which would again set the record by just seven additional makes.

Quentin Richardson’s 3-point record for the Suns remains elusive

And yet, despite the team mark falling for five straight years and primed to fall again, the individual record for 3-pointers made in a season still stands 20 years later.

Quentin Richardson holds the Suns record by making 226 3-pointers in a single season. Remarkably, that record has stood since 2004-05 (Q’s only season in a Suns uniform).

But could that record finally be beaten?

Suns marksman Royce O’Neale has been on a heater from deep seemingly the entire 2025-26 season thus far. Unlike teammate Grayson Allen, who has missed significant time due to injuries, O’Neale has stayed healthy and locked in from beyond the arc.

“Rolls Royce” has made 115 treys in 39 games at a career-best 42.4% clip. That percentage slots him No. 17 in all of basketball in terms of 3-point efficiency among qualified shooters. The number of makes puts him on pace to hit 241 triples if he plays in all 82 games, which would easily beat the record.

Of course, it’s fair to assume O’Neale will ultimately miss time at some point during the season. He’s played in all 82 games just once, back during his sophomore professional season with the Utah Jazz in 2018-19.

Doing the math, O’Neale would remain on pace to beat Q’s record by just one 3-pointer if he misses five games and finishes with 77 played. Any fewer than that, and Richardson’s mark may remain the standard for at least another season.

O’Neale once again lit it up from deep in the Jan. 11 win over the Washington Wizards in which he cashed five of his nine attempts. He’s now made at least four triples in four straight games after shooting 2-of-11 from beyond the arc in the two games to start 2026.

There’s an outside chance O’Neale could be on the trade block leading up to February’s trade deadline. If his team-friendly contract gets moved, Q’s record will hold by default.

There are a number of factors still at play, but O’Neale’s sharpshooting from deep could ultimately etch his name into Suns’ lore.

Whether his own record would stand for more than two decades? Well, let's see if he can break the record first.
