The Phoenix Suns agreed to trade Kevin Durant to the Rockets on June 22, but the NBA’s rules prevent the deal from being finalized until July 6, which opened the door for the deal expand to involve a record seven teams. The Suns officially received Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Khaman Malauch, Rasheer Fleming, Koby Brea, and two second-round draft picks for the future Hall of Famer and a handful of second-rounders.

The Rockets signing Clint Capela in free agency forced this deal to expand and become a record-breaker. The previous largest deal was the Klay Thompson sign-and-trade in the summer of 2024 which involved six teams. Durant is again part of history as he heads to Houston.

The Suns had to trade Kevin Durant to get some flexibility, but it was stunning to see owner Mat Ishbia admit his mistake. A deal like this seemed impossible even two years ago, but the new CBA forces teams to get creative. The trade involved seven 2025 draft picks and four Western Conference contenders.

This deal was difficult to keep track of as pieces were added. Below are the full details of the seven-team Kevin Durant trade.

  • Suns received: Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming, Koby Brea, Daeqwon Plowden, 2026 2nd round pick, 2032 2nd round pick
  • Rockets received: Kevin Durant, Clint Capela
  • Hawks received: David Roddy, 2031 2nd round pick, cash
  • Nets received: 2026 2nd round pick, 2030 2nd round pick
  • Warriors received: Alex Toohey, Jahmai Mashack
  • Lakers received: Adou Thiero
  • Timberwolves received: Rocco Zikarsky, 2026 2nd round pick, 2032 2nd round pick, cash

Durant is officially a Rocket. The 15-time All-Star joins a title contender that desperately needs his scoring. The 36-year-old is still elite and should have less responsibility in Houston. He will just be handing out buckets.

The Suns got two rotation players and the tenth overall pick in the 2025 draft, which they used on Khaman Maluach, from Houston for KD. They hope the rookie turns into a dominant two-way force. Maluach has Defensive Player of the Year upset and gives Phoenix the young building block they’ve lacked in recent years. It did not match the haul the Suns gave up for Durant, but the franchise was happy to get a top-ten draft pick and Dillon Brooks to promote a more defense-first identity.

The Phoenix Suns have remade their team this offseason, but they feel further from contention. They traded for Mark Williams to be their starting center and signed the EuroLeague Final Four MVP in free agency. Those are helpful additions, but the Suns sent the best player packing. The front office hopes added depth and defense will lead to more wins. Sadly, it likely puts the Suns firmly in the lottery without their draft pick.

There is plenty more pain to come from the original Kevin Durant trade. The Suns cut ties, but they owe draft capital through 2029. It is a dangerous position and likely only gets worse. All fans can do is hope that Maluach turns into a star.
