The Phoenix Suns could bring back Jordan Goodwin to help solve their backcourt woes after the Lakers waived him. LA had to create room to sign Marcus Smart, and Goodwin had a small guarantee in his contract. The 26-year-old showed flashes with the Lakers and could play a key role in Phoenix.
The Suns have a massive hole at point guard and just missed out on Chris Paul. Devin Booker and Jalen Green will have the ball in their hands, but Phoenix needs someone capable of defending at the point of attack and keeping the ball moving.
Goodwin could be that player. The 6’3 guard was an improved shooter for the Lakers and could blossom into the 3-and-D wing every team wants. The Suns should take another chance, especially with their need for playmaking.
The Suns could bring back Jordan Goodwin on a minimum contract
Goodwin is a fantastic depth option on a minimum contract. He averaged 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 steal in 18.7 minutes per game for the Lakers last season. He has produced a positive value over replacement player (VORP) in every season of his NBA career and brings versatility to the Suns' backcourt.
Goodwin could play in lineups with Booker and Green or in more of a secondary creator role in the second unit. The 6’3 guard is a plus rebounder and averaged 4.5 assists in 29.2 minutes per game for the Grizzlies to close out the 2023-24 season. Phoenix is not a serious contender and should try to help Goodwin blossom.
There were flashes during his first stint with the Suns, but the franchise traded him as part of the package for Royce O’Neale at the deadline. They were all-in on winning, and Goodwin was struggling to make shots. He has grown a lot since and could finally show Suns fans his true skills.
The Suns traded Kevin Durant and dumped Bradley Beal this offseason. They will be a much different team. Devin Booker got a fresh extension and is locked in as their alpha. Mat Ishbia and the front office must surround him with talent, or Booker will be the next one walking out that door.
Jordan Goodwin should be searching for minutes as he hits the free agent market. The Phoenix Suns certainly have some available, and this could quickly become the ideal fit. His first stint didn’t work, but things are different now. They should try to get him back in hopes of qualifying for the postseason. It will be a difficult task. Hopefully, the Suns get back on track and keep building around D-Book for years to come.
