Perfect trade candidate emerging for Suns if Devin Booker ever wants out

Hard to ignore the package they could offer.

The Phoenix Suns have returned to being a rebuilding team around Devin Booker this season, and so far that has resulted in only a single win. Not that the franchise is concerned about the 29-year-old leaving The Valley, he signed a monster extension this offseason knowing well what he was getting himself in for.

But suppose Booker eventual tires of all of the losing and realizes he is running out of opportunities to win it all. If he officially asked to be traded - even off the record and to the front office only - there would immediately be a queue of rivals trying to prise him away from Phoenix. From what we've seen so far this season, one franchise has emerged as the best trade partner for the Suns.

The San Antonio Spurs have everything Suns could want.

Assuming both sides could make it work financially - and with neither above the apron - there are many ways to make that happen. Beginning with Booker, the Spurs would be among the best situations to send him to in order to win. Victor Wembanyama is way ahead of schedule - like MVP of the league this season good - and they will be contenders for years to come.

Suns' owner Mat Ishbia would likely do right by Booker, and if San Antonio is where he wanted to go, they'd try and make that happen for him. If you're the Spurs, although the back end of Booker's contract is eye watering, they don't yet have an elite scorer that they could pair with the French phenom that would take them to the next level.

If you're the Suns, it really is a take your pick of point guards to begin the discussion. If Ishbia wants to not bottom out completely, then De'Aaron Fox would be the guy. He brings with him a floor of about 25 wins, and would ensure the team remains competitive on some nights. This is also the player the Spurs would want to part with in such a scenario to avoid paying him as well.

Then there is Stephon Castle, the reigning Rookie of the Year. He is the kind of tenacious and exciting player the Suns would love to build around, and they've already got the center in Khaman Maluach to pair with him. Failure to acquire him would then see the Suns pivot to second overall pick from this year's draft, Dylan Harper.

He too is off to a nice start in the league, but it is unclear where exactly he fits in Texas. The Spurs also have their own first round picks in 2028 and 2029, as well as favorable swaps in 2026 and 2027. The Suns would get at least one of those, while the likes of Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan provide intrigue.

Not that the Suns want to think about this doomsday scenario, but it is worth keeping tabs on the rest of the league for future deals. The Spurs are ahead of schedule and have three high level point guards, plus some younger players and picks. Best of all, they would have a clear need for Booker if he was available as well. One to think about.
