The Phoenix Suns are going to have to be creative with how they improve their roster this offseason. A big trade appears out of the question, so they will once again have to go shopping in the bargain bin.
Which is why the franchise should have so much interest in players who will be waived by their current teams. An excellent way to add value around the fringes of their roster.
Magic waiving Jonathan Isaac would be music to the Suns’ ears
One such name who is likely going to be sent packing by his current team is Jonathan Isaac of the Orlando Magic. Injuries having derailed what was once a terrifying defensive prospect.
The former lottery pick would be an excellent addition in The Valley, because he ticks every box on their list of requirements. He would also be available at the veteran’s minimum, which is as good a reason as any for the Suns to get involved here.
There has been a lot of talk about the organization adding a forward this summer via trade, with everybody from Aaron Gordon to Julius Randle being brought up. Isaac is obviously not in their class, but he’s a realistic target who could bridge a gap next season before the team has to decide whether or not to extend Dillon Brooks.
He would also be an ideal backup to Brooks, and really the Suns should only be looking to play him 15-20 minutes a night. He’d still likely miss about half the team’s games, but the potential of what he could bring to head coach Jordan Ott’s defensive schemes is too special to ignore. The Suns a top 10 defensive unit last season, who had dips in points allowed when Mark Williams was unavailable.
Isaac would prop the bench up when on the court, while he would be an excellent mentor to Khaman Maluach. Players like this are also exactly why the franchise has to say goodbye to Jamaree Bouyea. A great pickup last time out, but the Suns are well stocked with guards while they need more length across their frontcourt.
Isaac certainly could bring that while he could also do with the change of scenery. Orlando is all he has known as a professional, and Phoenix would be a fresh start for a player who needs it. This makes too much sense for all involved not to happen, it is on the front office to get it done.
