The Phoenix Suns have struggled out the gates to a 1-4 start, but injuries to some of their starters have not helped them be as competitive as they can be when fully healthy. Jalen Green is yet to suit up having come over from the Houston Rockets, while Dillon Brooks has missed the last couple with groin soreness.

Even when head coach Jordan Ott has a full compliment of players to choose from, this team is still going to struggle on both ends of the court. Yet it is the defensive end where he had hoped to be better right away, but right now the Suns are allowing more points per game than everybody not named the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets.

Suns fans begging for Mark Williams to be full-time starter.

Despite being the worst defensive team in the Western Conference, the franchise have a way to tighten up that fans are crying out for. Start center Mark Williams, which they finally did for the first time in the loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Prior to that, it was Oso Ighodaro who was getting the nod despite being a forward by nature. He struggled badly.

It is still super early in the campaign, but already the 23-year-old has shown a level of durability that most didn't expect to see. The only game so far he's missed has been a back-to-back against the Denver Nuggets, and although that might not seen ideal, if this is what it takes to ensure Williams plays over 55 games this season then it is necessary.

The 24 minutes the former Charlotte Hornet has managed each night is already more than Ighodaro's 17.6, even though he was coming off the bench. But fans rightly wanted to see him start each game alongside Booker because he is part of the strongest five coach Ott can put out there, and it should lead to a more competitive team once Green and Brooks are healthy as well.

Williams wasn't thought of as a great rim protector by many heading into the season, but this person got his impact on that end badly wrong. So far when he is out there, the Suns have the same defensive rating as the Cleveland Cavaliers (112.3), and they boast the current Defensive Player of the Year in Evan Mobley.

Obviously Williams is no Mobley, but this further highlights the need for him to keep the starting spot moving forward. This could also have the knock-on impact of ensuring rookie Khaman Maluach gets more minutes as his backup, now that Ighodaro appears to have been taken out of that rotation and will only get spot minutes there which is the right call.

The Suns gave up a pair of second round picks for him for a reason, and that was to be a starter. They may have lost to the Grizzlies, but they looked so much better when Williams was out there while the opportunity to continue to build chemistry with Booker is an enticing one. Sitting back-to-backs is fine, as long as he can produce at this level with the starters for the rest of the season.
