How many games will the Phoenix Suns win in 2024-25
By Luke Duffy
Last season was the first time that this writer attempted to predict how many games the Phoenix Suns would win. With Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton out in favor of Bradley Beal, Jusuf Nurkic and Grayson Allen - not to mention a new head coach in Frank Vogel - the feeling around The Valley was very good indeed.
The season didn't quite pan out that way - although in winning 49 games - the Suns weren't as bad as you might remember either. No point guard sure, and a lack of cohesive nights on both ends of the court, but talent saw them overcome all manner of opponents and go on a seven-game winning streak. Which made the 54-28 prediction not a bad one at all, being off by five wins.
So let's try and get even closer in 2024-25.
If anything the returning trio of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal makes this year's win total harder to peg, because they have another new leading man in Mike Budenholzer - the fit looks better already - and a legitimate point guard in Tyus Jones. Feel free to bookmark this one then, and poke fun at @LucaLockheart when he inevitably gets this one all wrong.
October 2024
We're coming out swinging here, as the Suns play five games to begin the season. The first two are in Los Angeles - both of which are on national television - and come against the Clippers and Lakers. Guess what? We're saying the Suns win both of these, to lay down a marker for the season ahead.
The Clippers lost Paul George this offseason and Kawhi Leonard is going to miss the game through injury. Which makes this the 35-year-old James Harden show, not quite as fearful as the past then. The win against the Lakers will be close, both teams really going for it, but the whole LeBron James and his son playing together element will overshadow the contest for the Lakers.
After that it's the first home game of the campaign against the Dallas Mavericks (on the second night of a back-to-back for the Suns no less), and we want to believe they won't drop that one either. This isn't some 82-0 season unfolding before our very eyes though, as the Lakers are going to come to town to give the Suns their first loss. Another trip to the Clippers follows, with another win.
November 2024
This is where the action is really going to heat up, and we have the Suns going a modest 9-5 here after that blistering 4-1 start. A pair of home wins over the Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers begin the month, before a home loss to the Miami Heat. Perhaps you could change the 76ers and Heat results - but with the latest on Joel Embiid - that doesn't seem wise.
The Suns then head out on a four-game road trip that begins with an Emirates Cup game over the Utah Jazz, so you can chalk that one up as a win. A visit to the Oklahoma City Thunder seems daunting though, and this will be a fascinating battle. Many experts predicting the Thunder will be the one seed out West this season.
Two nights after that its a rematch with the Minnesota Timberwolves - and try as we might to see the positives here - this will again be another loss and tough lesson for this group. One that will stand to them as the season progresses though. Another cup win at home to the Lakers is on the cards, while we think the Suns will split a pair of home games versus the Orlando Magic and New York Knicks.
December 2024
Entering this month at 14-6 is a nice spot to be in, and it should see the Suns jostling for homecourt advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. This is the point where the season will take a turn though, and it will be about staying the course as we think they'll go 6-5 during this period.
Also important to note is that the NBA Cup will reach its conclusion, and there's every chance the Suns will make the last four in Las Vegas for the first time. The most interesting home matchup may come on December 3rd when the San Antonio Spurs come to town. They beat the Suns twice last season, and we have them doing just that again this time out.
A two-game trip to Florida we also have going down as two defeats for the Suns - although there'll be a win in New Orleans against the Pelicans before that - while they'll also split the Christmas series against the Denver Nuggets. Losing on December 23rd in Denver, before getting revenge two nights later on Christmas Day in the Footprint Center.
The last home game of the calendar year comes on New Year's Eve against the Memphis Grizzlies, and as things stand that goes down as a loss. Both because the Grizzlies look out to prove they shouldn't be overlooked, and because at this point Beal is likely to have missed some time through injury. If you're keeping score at home this group is 19-11.
January 2025
A three game East coast swing will be exactly what this team needs to regroup, and they'll make light work of the Charlotte Hornets and Indiana Pacers. The 76ers will even the season series though. In fact this could be the month where we see another sizeable win streak get put together by the franchise.
The Suns could conceivably win those three games, and they follow that up with meetings against the Atlanta Hawks, Jazz and Hornets (all home), then the Hawks again, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers and Brooklyn Nets (all away). After that, it is the Wizards again at home.
This is a prime opportunity to beat up on some weaker Eastern Conference teams, while after all that the Clippers and Timberwolves will head to The Valley. This is a soft part of the schedule, with those road trips coming against ideal opponents at a time in the season when it is hoped a few of them will have begun to think about the NBA Draft.
Which is why we're bullish that this could be an 11-4 month for the Suns, and it will be be the run that begins to separate them from the second rung of teams in the Western Conference. A record of 30-15 as the All-Star break comes into focus does not sound too bad at all, although they'll be starting to run out of games to break 50 wins, a mark many in the media think they will eclipse easily.
February 2025
Beginning this month with back-to-back games in Portland against the Trail Blazers is nice, but it gets harder after that. There will be another visit to the Thunder, plus trips to the Grizzlies, Spurs and Houston Rockets. Which is why we think 9-4 sounds about right here, with the Suns losing that game in Houston.
A pair of home games versus the Pelicans is also going down as a split - as even though the Suns are the better team - the law of averages says that roster is good enough to take one from the Suns at some point in a long season. There's also another home tilt against both the Grizzlies and Nuggets, which again feels like a split.
Propping up February and around the All-Star festivities are road games against the Chicago Bulls and Toronto Raptors, which feel like easy wins. So too does a final meeting with the Jazz - although if Durant or Booker have begun to miss any siginificant amount of time as a result of injury - then this estimation is going to be way off.
March 2025
Business end of the campaign now, and it is kicked off with a home win over the Timberwolves. The Clippers will finally squeak out a win at the fourth time of asking though, winning in Phoenix as they come down from the high of sticking it to Anthony Edwards and company.
Really though this 15 game month is packed with difficult games and trips, and it is the first time all season the Suns will have seen the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics. Both come to The Valley, while in the final action of March there is another visit to Minnesota in what feels like a loss.
That Bucks/Celtics combo is part of a five-game homestand that also includes the Raptors, Bulls and Cavaliers, which again represents a nice chance to tack some wins onto the board. Prior to that however is one of the most daunting asks of the entire year, a four-game West swing that takes in Denver, Dallas, Memphis and Houston.
We've put this down as an 0-4 trip which is going to be met with ridicule, but might actually be the perfect moment for this losing run. If ever there was a time to realize that the playoffs are going to be incredibly difficult and that matchup truly matters, this dreadful slide will be what brings everybody together. Which is why they'll survive this gauntlet eith a slender 8-7 record.
April 2025
Of the seven games this month - and we think they'll go 4-3 in April - it doesn't get any harder than three road games against the Bucks, Celtics and Knicks to kick things off. That looks like a 1-2 trip waiting to happen, with the lone win coming up in Milwaukee.
That is followed up by three home contests - which will include a win over the Thunder - although the Golden State Warriors will pick up a win in Phoenix. The first time that will have happened all season. There will be a home victory over the Spurs, before a loss in the final game of the campaign away to the Sacramento Kings.
They'll be fighting to avoid the play-in at that point in time - and although they will ultimately have to go through the back door in attempts to make the postseason - they will do their part in beating the Suns in their own house. This will drop them to 3-4 in this month and mark the first time all season that they have a losing month.
When you tally all of these results up, it puts the Suns at 50-30 on these games, with the two other contests to be decides around the NBA Cup. Given that we don't know who those games will be against yet - and also given the nature of this group - we're going to say that the Suns will split those to finish the season just over that 50 win total that many seem to think they'll surpass.
