The Phoenix Suns began their offseason sooner than they wanted after being officially eliminated from the Play-In Tournament. They've already started making moves, including firing head coach Mike Budenholzer. There's one move everyone is waiting for: trading Kevin Durant.
Phoenix made Durant available before the 2025 deadline, which came as a surprise to the superstar. The Suns and Warriors were close to agreeing on a deal, but KD told Phoenix that he wanted to remain in Arizona for the remainder of the season. He later explained it had nothing to do with not wanting to return to Golden State, but instead, he didn't want to be traded midseason.
The way the season ended for the Suns is further proof that Durant will be traded. He'll be 37 before next season begins, so time is ticking for him to win another title. KD is still playing at a high level, but he can't escape Father Time for too much longer.
There will be suitors lining up to inquire about Durant's services, but one significant factor could decrease interest. Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks were swept by the Pacers in the first round (again), with their season officially ending Tuesday. He understandably didn't want to talk about his future after the loss, but it wouldn't be surprising at all if he requested a trade this summer.
Kevin Durant might not be the biggest name on the trade market
Durant would be a cheaper option for opposing teams to acquire, considering his age and the fact that he has only one season left on his current contract, but that doesn't mean he'll receive more interest than Giannis. The latter turned 30 a few months ago and still has several years left in the NBA.
Teams that were interested in KD before the deadline could pivot their attention to Giannis if he becomes available. It's not as if Phoenix was going to get a substantial return for Durant to begin with, but the Suns might have to accept an offer lower than they initially wanted if interest is lower than expected due to Antetokounmpo.
It hasn't been made official yet that Phoenix will trade Durant (we all know it's coming), as the NBA offseason hasn't begun yet. Talks will ramp up after a new champion is crowned, and we enter the draft/free agency period.
This summer could be all about Durant, or it could shift to center around Giannis' future. The Suns hope it'll be the former, so that they can control the spotlight.
