One of the more underrated aspects of Dillon Brooks and the impact he has had on the Phoenix Suns has been the fact he doesn’t take himself too seriously. No, we’re not kidding.

Although he’s locked-in on the court and loves getting into it with LeBron James, there is a light-hearted side to the 29-year-old away from the game that occssioanlly shines through when he’s out there too.

Brooks jokes that plays don’t get called for him in Phoenix

In the aftermath of the Suns getting back to winning ways with a beat down of Brooks’ former team in the Memphis Grizzlies, he was asked by Damichael Cole of Memphis News about wanting plays called for him in his last days with that franchise.

Ever the joker, Brooks responded by saying that he “still don’t get no plays called for me”, before offering up a knowing smile. The perfect response that explains so much about why this season has gone right in The Valley.

Whereas the Suns had to figure out how to run plays for both Devin Booker and Kevin Durant across the last two seasons, Brooks is much better at being the second option (and sometimes lower depending on who has got it going that night) who still manages to get his points in the flow of the offense.

It’s clearly working, his 21.2 points by far a career high. It’s not just the improved volume of scoring, Brooks has hit monster shots to help the Suns win games, including a key bucket to help put the Oklahoma City Thunder on ice recently.

Brooks has clearly accepted that on any given night he’s not going to get plays called for him, which is in contrast to the way it had to be when one of the best scorers of all time in Durant was in town. Booker never complained about that fact either, but it was clearly an adjustment that never worked out for all involved.

That’s nobody’s fault either (not that Durant sees it that way), and it was worth finding out. But the two-way impact of Brooks combined with the lower expectations he has about his role in the offense is clearly a better fit for both Booker and the rest of this roster.

The fact he can so masterfully deflect a potentially difficult question from a media member covering his former team is a testament to how differently he treats being on the court versus off it. It’s not that Brooks grew up or even had to, he just understands how he handles himself between the lines and with a microphone in front of him can be different things.

Brooks likely won’t be an All-Star this season but he should be. He clearly impacts winning, is part of a top 10 defense and is the Suns’ second best scorer even though he doesn’t need plays called for him and can poke fun at himself for that fact. What else do you really need from him?
