The 2025-26 season was one of redemption for Dillon Brooks despite how the playoffs ended versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.
His standing around the league having never been this high, while the decision to trade him for Kevin Durant looks worse for the ailing Houston Rockets every day.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hilariously trolls Brooks after defeat
There was a lot of love shared between international teammates Brooks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the aftermath of the Suns being swept by the reigning league MVP and company.
The pair have gone to battle together for their country many times, and it is clear both respect one another while “SGA” understands the mentality and humor of Brooks more than most.
Never was this more evident than in his Instagram post after the series, changing the back of Brooks’ jersey to ready “Cancun on 3” while also pointing at the Suns’ most clutch player in the series in a mocking way.
Shai is cold for this 😂🔥

Thing is, this is the kind of thing Brooks can get behind, and you just know he was the funny side in all of this. He was preparing for Game 5 during media exit interviews after all.
During those interviews he also referenced his DUI from earlier in the season and has always been honest in saying he would have traded himself for Durant if he were running the Rockets as well.
That level of self-depreciation and not being afraid to be the butt of the joke is what Gilgeous-Alexander said what he did without any fear of an awkward interaction the next time they are in national camp together.
Humor and involving himself is also how Brooks wraps his burning intensity in the kind of blanket that makes it easier for teammates to be around on a daily basis.
Brooks also backed up all of his own talk by elevating his level in the postseason with some crazy shot making, while his desire to win each night is what carried Phoenix through a regular season in which they surprised everybody.
Really though the Suns got swept, Brooks called out Gilgeous-Alexander earlier in the series saying he would defend him and struggled to do so for long periods and the Thunder are advancing. Having a little fun in the process is no bad thing, even if the “unethical hoops” that the defending champions play with infuriates many.
Gilgeous-Alexander was at least gracious about victory when speaking to the media, giving Phoenix their flowers and talking about the “respect level” the Thunder had for their opponents. Brooks was a huge part of that.
