Devin Booker extension may secretly give Suns the perfect escape plan

It could (literally) pay off.

Mat Ishbia said he has no intention of trading Devin Booker this summer, and the 28-year-old star reportedly wants to remain with the Phoenix Suns. Brian Windhorst said on his podcast, Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective, that Booker is " more than willing" to sign an extension this offseason.

Booker has been in Phoenix since 2015. He joined a lowly Suns squad that he helped propel into a contender, but unfortunately, the past couple of years have sent Phoenix back down the ranks. The disappointing season that the Suns had in 2024-25 has led many to wonder if Booker would want to be traded to a team better positioned for the future.

However, Booker repeatedly said that he wants to retire with the Suns. He wants to be the player to lead Phoenix to its first NBA title. Based on what Windhorst noted, that hasn't changed, even though the Suns' future is bleak.

Booker's situation in Phoenix has been compared to Bradley Beal's time in Washington, D.C. Beal signed a five-year maximum contract with the Wizards in 2022, even though they were an NBA bottom-dweller. He agreed to lift his no-trade clause to be traded to the Suns a year later.

Booker might do the same after next season if he signs a two-year extension this offseason. Signing him to a new contract would increase his trade value next year because interested teams wouldn't have to worry about having Booker for only a couple of years.

Odds are that Kevin Durant will be traded this summer, and it doesn't seem like Phoenix will be able to trade Beal, barring a miracle. The Suns don't have a high draft pick either. Phoenix doesn't have the means to improve the roster, meaning this time next year, the Suns could be in a similar position to the one they're in now, if not worse.

Booker could decide that being in Phoenix is no longer what he feels is best for him. He'll be 29 in October and would be one of the top names on the trade market. Teams would be lining up to get Booker, which would help the Suns recoup the draft assets they've lost the past few years.

The last thing some fans might want to think about is a Booker trade, especially with him wanting to sign an extension. However, a trade might be inevitable given the direction Phoenix is headed.
