In the opening few minutes of a messy meeting with New Orleans Pelicans on the second night of a back-to-back against the same opponent, point guard Collin Gillespie did some things.
Neither of them were remarkable, although both would ultimately end up in the box score, but they served to highlight exactly why he is going to get a serious raise this coming offseason.
Gillespie always makes the right decision
It seems like such an obvious thing to point out, and yet nobody has. When Gillespie is on the court, he always makes the right decision and more often than not, that involves setting up his teammates.
Those aforementioned things the Villanova product was doing? Early on Royce O'Neale missed a 3-pointer, but Gillespie ended up with the ball after an offensive rebound.
He had a pretty good luck, certainly for a player shooting 41.5 percent from deep this season you would be more than happy for him to take it. Instead he gave it to O'Neale again.

His veteran teammate deliberated taking the shot, decided against it and looked to give it back to Gillespie, before then deciding he had enough space to launch another three. This one went in.
About 90 seconds later he was taking the ball up the court, and on this occasion gave it up to Devin Booker for a 3-point attempt.
That didn't go in (it's been a struggle for Booker from deep this season) and Gillespie actually got the offensive rebound himself this time. Rather than try and set something up, he drove the baseline himself.
Once in the paint he gave it up to the incoming Dillon Brooks, who strolled into the paint for an uncontested layup. The Pelicans immediately called timeout.
The first Pelicans' play after that break, and Gillespie got lost on a screen. He recovered by instead following Trey Murphy III, before Booker instructed him to switch again.
The Suns got away with the breakdown, Booker rebounded the missed shot and he immediately gave it back to Gillespie. Who gave it back to Booker after he got free from an Oso Ighodaro screen, who then rewarded the big man as he rolled to the basket for an easy two.
Gillespie didn't get any credit for that one, but it was his decision to push the pace as the Pelicans weren't set defensively that led to an easy basket.
You get the picture, and this is only a tiny sample size of what the 26-year-old is doing every single night. Head coach Jordan Ott loves his defensive effort and he has been making plenty of shots so far this season.
But you can't put a price on having a guy out there who is always going to make the right basketball decision, whether it works out or not, and which puts his team first. That's our MVP.
