The Phoenix Suns have the 47th pick in this year’s NBA Draft, and they should feel quietly confident that they can add another player who can slot into the back end of their rotation.
Taking a point guard with this selection would also appear to make sense, and the franchise themselves must think the same way as they are rumored to have worked out Robert McCray of Florida State in advance of the draft.
McCray the ideal replacement for Jamaree Bouyea
The Seminoles guard played four seasons of college ball, which again makes sense for Phoenix as they don’t need any more projects right now. Immediate ball-handling help for Devin Booker should be a high priority, as well as replacing Bouyea with a younger and potentially cheaper alternative.
Robert McCray V from Florida State is another player the Suns have had a pre-draft workout with. The 6-4 PG, who played four years of college basketball, is a projected second-round pick.

Bouyea was fantastic when he landed in The Valley last season, but the Suns appear to be prioritizing bringing back both Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin. This is the right call, while it would give McCray the chance to go to the G League throughout next season when required. We have already seen how beneficial that was for Khaman Maluach and Oso Ighodaro (himself a second round pick) before him.
In an ideal world it would be great to keep hold of Bouyea, alongside Goodwin he helped head coach Jordan Ott win some games with guard heavy lineups, but the time to make the change is now. The 26-year-old currently has a team option for next year in his contract, but at nearly $3 million that is money that could be put to use elsewhere.
The Suns flirting with the idea of going above one or both aprons, a position that harmed them massively when Kevin Durant was in town. With Mark Williams wanting an extension and Dillon Brooks eligible as well, there simply is not enough money to go around.
With Gillespie and Goodwin likely to receive multiple year deals, why would the front office put themselves in the position of having to pay Bouyea more money to keep him around beyond next season?
Better to solve that issue with a guard coming out of college now, and give Bouyea the chance at more financial security elsewhere in the league.
Even if McCray himself does not end up being the pick, taking a point guard to make Booker and Jalen Green’s life easier has to be the move here. It is an issue that they have not properly solved since Chris Paul was in town, and everything from having Booker run the show to signing Tyus Jones has not worked. Unfortunate for Bouyea, but necessary for the Suns.
