All-Star center could end up in Phoenix this offseason

A welcome change from the Durant saga.

The Phoenix Suns have only just traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets, and already attentions have turned to Bradley Beal. The 31-year-old didn't appear likely to move anywhere this offseason, because he has a no-trade clause and his family appear settled in Phoenix.

But the first signs of smoke emerged on social media of a potential Beal exit, which would be a win for the Suns having so badly lost the Durant deal. The team in question who might be talking themselves into Beal? None other than the Chicago Bulls, who appear to have a desire to compete for a play-in spot indefinitely.

Suns could land All-Star big Nikola Vucevic in a Beal deal.

In order for Beal to head to Chicago - assuming he is not bought out for a massive fee and walks there himself - the Bulls would likely have to send back Nikola Vucevic and Patrick Williams to make the salaries work. Williams looked like he had a bright future in the league a few seasons back, but he just cannot get healthy.

That might be where the appeal lies for Chicago in doing this deal. Get off paying both Williams and Vucevic, and then next season Beal will be an expiring contract anyway. From the perspective of the Suns however, they could do worse than the 34-year-old former two-time All-Star, who would unlock a lot of doors for them offensively.

In fact Vucevic would be everything Jusuf Nurkic wasn't on that end, with his deft passing and ability to step out and make a 3-pointer. It would also allow Nick Richards to come off the bench - a role he looked much more comfortable with while on the Charlotte Hornets - to give a little bit of juice to a second unit that currently isn't up to much.

The downside here is obviously Vucevic's defensive abilities - or lack of - and boy does he get targeted by bigger centers on a nightly basis. Yet despite this, he would still clearly be the best big the Suns would have on their roster since Deandre Ayton left, while it would also finally bring the curtain down on Beal's time in Phoenix.

There has also been some talk of the Suns going after Kristaps Porzingis, and the Durant deal coupled with the Boston Celtics moving on from Jrue Holiday does make that more plausible than ever. He's a better player than Vucevic, but has struggled with his own spotty injury history and missing large chunks of the playoffs this season with a mystery illness.

Given the chance, the Suns would likely pick Porzingis over Vucevic, but Beal is the key to all of this. The Celtics aren't going to want him, while Beal and his no-trade clause would surely fancy linking up with Billy Donovan once again in Chicago. If any head coach can help him get back to his best and trust him with the basketball, it is Donovan. An interesting development to watch.
