The Phoenix Suns have some questions going into the 2023-24 season, even after the crazy trades and moves we have seen the last year. The Kevin Durant trade kept them in as one of the best teams in the Western Conference. The Bradley Beal trade made them one of the best teams in the league. In a way, they have a dream team, you could say.
But, as we said, they still have questions. We know they can have one of the best lineups in the league because they do have what many would call a “big four” with Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, Durant, and Beal.
The biggest question, outside of how the depth will be with players like Jock Landale leaving, is who will be that fifth guy every night. We know the fifth-best player on the roster is, but Josh Okogie may not always fit with the starting lineup.
Recently, new head coach Frank Vogel gave a little insight on what he plans to do with that final spot in the starting lineup.
“I think the one that is going to fit the best, really,” Vogel said when asked who that fifth guy will be. “We’ll have a lot of guys that have an opportunity to be that fifth guy.
“The versatility of maybe being able to guard multiple positions, or maybe it’s an elite shooter. Maybe it’s just another playmaker,” said Vogel.
Vogel is a guy that we have seen coach at the highest level. He has won a championship before with the Los Angeles Lakers, and for the folks who want to use LeBron James as the excuse for that, he has been to the Eastern Conference Finals twice with the Indiana Pacers.
Vogel, with both of those teams, was very good at adjusting to what the opposing team had based on the lineups he wanted to use. His ability to adjust is one of the best in the NBA. We will see plenty of different lineups used, whether it be Okogie, Damien Lee, or even Bol Bol.
No matter what the lineup is for that game, Suns’ fans should be confident in their new head coach.
