Phoenix Suns acquire Josh Richardson for Landry Shamet, Josh Okogie and a 2023 second-round pick

After showing promising signs with the Miami Heat early in his career, Josh Richardson has become a journeyman across the NBA in recent years. He’s spent the last three seasons between the Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics and lastly the Spurs.

He had a fairly productive season in 2021-22, rediscovering his shooting touch in impressive fashion. Although he’s made a name for himself as a stout, versatile defender, Richardson averaged 10.2 points on an outstanding 41.5% from three.

Why would the Suns do it?

Is Richardson a major upgrade over Shamet? Not really. However, it’s a way of getting off from Shamet’s long-term money while acquiring someone who may be a better fit in the Suns system.

The Spurs wouldn’t be fanatical about taking on Shamet’s contract, hence the involvement of a second-round pick. Adding another defensive-minded wing would cease the need for Okogie, allowing his salary to be included to make the deal work.

Why would the Spurs do it?

Richardson actually helped them over the final period of last season, with his two-way ability appearing more valuable to winning that Shamet’s lone skill. Okogie’s minimum contract means they could immediately waive him if they wish, or see what they have given his relative youth. A second-round pick may appear like little compensation, but it’s something to add to their growing haul of future assets.

Given Okogie recently signed with the Suns in free agency, he’s ineligible to be traded just yet. Regardless, this is a deal that would likely take place mid-season.
