The Phoenix Suns couldn’t have asked much more from Mikal Bridges after the franchise traded for the forward on draft night in 2018.
After four years in the league, the 25-year-old has developed into one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, and plays an invaluable offensive role next to key playmakers Chris Paul and Devin Booker.
But, unfortunately for Bridges, he isn’t and will never be Kevin Durant. With the Suns making a play for the two-time Finals MVP, the Defensive Player of the Year finalist is well and truly in the firing line.
With Mikal Bridges factoring as the Phoenix Suns’ major trade chip for Kevin Durant, the forward has released honest tweets regarding the speculation.
The Athletics’ Shams Charania reported on Monday that the Suns had offered the Nets a package of Bridges and picks for Durant, which Brooklyn unsurprisingly rejected. A few hours later, Bridges released a tweet simply with eyes emojis, followed by a tweet that read, “Im sittin here watching just like yall lol”.
The tweets were inundated with Suns fans reassuring Bridges of their, the city, and the franchises love for him. His hard-nosed on-court style, along with his authentic off-court nature and personality, have made Bridges a fan favourite of fans across his four years in the league.
Still, some were also quick to identify that it’s a business, and its become apparent that trading Bridges for Durant may be an emotional but logical decision. Making things all the more heart-rending is Bridges sentimental pinned tweet on his profile from August 21, 2020. He wrote “I don’t ever want to leave” with a heart emoji in response to a Suns tweet appreciating him.
The chances of Bridges leaving the franchise remains slim at this stage, with Brooklyn unlikely to accept any deal in the near future unless it involves franchise cornerstone Devin Booker.
