Jae Crowder has been a fantastic asset for the Phoenix Suns over the past two seasons, yet a recent tweet has fueled speculation that his time with the franchise may be limited.

The 32-year-old’s tweet was as cryptic as they come, with only he knowing the true intentions of his words. These kind of messages aren’t uncommon for NBA players, but they undoubtedly ignite discussion among fans.

Jae Crowder’s recent tweet may marry up with other important factors that could signify a nearing departure from the Phoenix Suns.

Crowder has averaged nearly 28 minutes and ten points per game with the Suns since his arrival in the 2020 offseason. He started in all 67 games he played last season, along with all 35 of the franchise’s playoff games in the last two seasons.

However, with a dwindling three-point percentage last season (34.8% in regular season, 30.2% in the playoffs), plus the emergence of younger forward Cameron Johnson, Crowder’s time in the Suns’ starting lineup could be coming to an end.

While that’s far from a guarantee, it would be interesting to see how Crowder may accept a bench role. Would the Suns believe they can find greater backup value from somewhere else?

Crowder’s also on an expiring $10.1 million contract. Perhaps Phoenix would consider trading him for a player on a multi-year deal, as long as they’re willing to commit more long-term money and the subsequent luxury tax implications.

However, Crowder’s familiarity with the Suns system, and his leadership and veteran experience, may mean James Jones and the front office are happy to retain him. They could back themselves to re-sign him in free agency, especially if they have a successful season.

Still, here are three players that the Suns could target in place of Crowder that may fit the bill – those that are signed for multiple years and provide excellent bench depth.
