The Phoenix Suns Regret Not Signing Deandre Ayton Last Offseason

Coming into this offseason, Deandre Ayton represents quite possibly the NBA’s largest question mark. Most view Ayton as a fringe top five free agent, only behind the big names like Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and Zach LaVine.

But with Ayton’s age and potential upside, one could argue him as the best player available this summer.

The Suns had a chance to lock him up last summer but decided to let push things off to the following offseason which has now arrived. Well, rumors and whispers have now surfaced saying that Ayton wants to leave the desert and has “more than likely” played his last game in a Suns uniform.

Not signing Ayton last year leaves the Suns front office in a sticky situation. Do you sign Ayton to the max and keep him? Or do you sign him in hopes to trade him for pieces that can help the team win and actually want to be here?

Either way, this could have been avoided with an extension last season. They could have still traded him this off season regardless, but now it seems like that is the only option where the Suns can get some kind of value from this situation they put themselves in.
