Phoenix Suns at Charlotte Hornets, January 2nd
With Phoenix’s full squad back together now, their days of handing G-League players 20+ minutes a night might feel like a distant memory. But only a few months ago, the Suns stepped into Charlotte with no choice but to do exactly that.
While Deandre Ayton, Jae Crowder, JaVale McGee, and even head coach Monty Williams watched in quarantine, Phoenix turned to recently signed players Bismack Biyombo, Paris Bass, MJ Walker, and Emanuel Terry against LaMelo Ball and company.
Those guys were paired with deep bench reserves Jalen Smith, Elfrid Payton, and Ish Wainright. Surviving pieces from the team’s normal rotation in Devin Booker, Chris Paul, Cameron Johnson, and Cameron Payne rounded out this rag-tag group which nobody knew what to expect from.
But despite their incohesiveness, Phoenix never missed a beat, as this squad defied the odds and took down the buzz boys in dramatic fashion.
Fueled by a career performance from Smith which included perhaps the team’s best dunk of the year, the Suns rolled over the Hornets 133-99, putting up their largest margin of victory for the season.
Biyombo played a rather large hand in getting Phoenix to that point as well. In what was his first game with the Suns, he contributed with 11 points, six rebounds, a steal, an assist, and a blocked shot, all while shooting a crisp 5-7 from the field.
