Phoenix Suns Throttle Trail Blazers: 3 Positive Takeaways From The Victory
Takeaways From Suns-Trail Blazers: Phoenix Suns Offense Moved the Ball Efficiently
Phoenix didn’t just beat the Trailblazers in the scoring column, they dominated Portland in almost every phase offensively.
While the backcourt was considerably lackluster compared to the Paul-Booker duo — Phoenix still managed to move the ball effectively. It’s hard not to acknowledge Cameron Payne’s role in how smoothly the offense was run. Fresh off of a right wrist sprain that had sidelined the guard since Jan. 22, Payne dished out 8 assists in his return to action.
In a postgame interview, Payne spoke on how Chris Paul has mentored him and helped improve the speed of his play. Payne explained that CP3 advised him to “find an in-between” when playing suggesting that everything doesn’t have to be a 100 miles per hour.
In some ways, Phoenix’s offensive success last night speaks to the lasting effect of having an all-time great player like Chris Paul in your locker room. Even when the “Point God” isn’t playing, he’s wearing a coach’s hat, helping to guide his teammates from the sideline. Needless to say, Paul’s advice helped as the Suns were able to move the ball and get into their sets.
Phoenix racked up 32 assists to end the night and having a familiar face returning to the back court added to their success in sharing the ball and executing plays. Newly signed guard Aaron Holiday led Phoenix with a team-high 9 assists from the bench.
Javale McGee and Deandre Ayton added 2 rebounds apiece to the Suns’ total of 7 offensive rebounds to control the glass for Phoenix. These types of unsung performances played in favor of their team as they were given multiple second chance opportunities.
Offensively, the Suns’ offense looked unbothered after reclaiming the lead following a slip early in the second quarter. Phoenix regrouped and they didn’t look back. Heading into the second half with a 63-48 lead.
