Phoenix Suns Dunk Contest Candidate: Jalen Smith

Almost since its creation, only younger players have stepped up to the Dunk Contest stage. In fact, Dominique Wilkins and three-time champ Nate Robinson represent the only two players older than 25 to ever win the event.

With Jalen Smith at 21-years-old, he checks off that box to begin with. But when you move onto his game, Stix’s bounce and finishing capabilities even more so make him a worthwhile addition to this year’s rim rattling extravaganza.

As prime evidence, look no further than his recent dunk over Mason Plumlee, which sent shockwaves that can still be felt throughout North Carolina. That play certainly resembles the “dunk of the year” so far for Phoenix, and possibly even the league at large.

Memories from his ferocious jams at the collegiate level add to Smith’s resumé as well. During March Madness a few years back, he came up huge down the stretch to help his Maryland Terrapins avoid an early upset, putting one Belmont defender in a body bag while extending a late lead.

With all that coming together, Smith deserves a shot to show out for the Suns on this platform. If he were to win, he would bring the Valley its third Dunk Contest trophy, tying the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves for the second most all-time by a single franchise.
