Phoenix Suns New Year’s Resolution: Shoot more Triples

As the league’s No. 3 scoring offense, the Suns certainly know how to put the ball through the hoop. They average 111.7 points per game, built up by Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and a few suitable role players who make timely contributions.

But even with their general proficiency, the Suns require an upgrade on offense, specifically with their shot selection.

As a team, Phoenix currently shoots 36.3 percent from downtown—the seventh best mark in the NBA. With Booker enjoying his best 3-point shooting season to date, Johnson knocking down seemingly everything he puts up, Mikal Bridges staying solid, and Jae Crowder always threatening to heat up, the Suns carry all the firepower needed to bomb their opponents.

But for some reason, they almost always abstain from doing so. When it comes to 3-point attempts, Phoenix falls into the league’s basement, averaging the fifth fewest with 31.7 per game.

Going forward, the Suns must recognize their talented shooters and take more 3-point attempts. Doing so will naturally increase their scoring output and space the floor to create even more one-one-one opportunities for Ayton around the rim.
