Grading Phoenix Suns Starters: Chris Paul

Current stats: 14.6 PPG, 10.1 APG (league-leader), 4.0 RPG, 2.0 SPG

Season 17 for the Point God has been one with his “game within the game” tactics on peak display.

From subtle maneuvers around the court, to open up rim runners in transition, manipulating big men into switches, and his signature rip through, he continues to win the chess match against all who face him.

But while respecting the countless moving parts around him, Paul has also been extremely particular in picking his spots. On the season, he averages career-low 10.8 field goal attempts per game, also with his third lowest usage percentage during second halves.

Of course, Paul’s game is not predicated solely on scoring, but when he does flip the switch, the team takes on a new dynamic and his baskets hold significant weight.

But Paul’s passing once again looks top notch this year. He leads the league with 10.1 assists per game, as well as potential assists with 19.0 per game, and assist points created with 25.5 per game.

He allows others to grow by accepting this less involved scoring role.  You cannot ask for much more from an aging point guard.
