Phoenix Suns Takeaways: Backup Centers Capable of Big Things

Like the NBA’s version of a running back committee, JaVale McGee and Frank Kaminsky shared the load left over from Deandre Ayton‘s absence perfectly during this game. They combined to go 12-18 from the field, scoring 35 points, and grabbing eight rebounds.

Both Ayton and McGee worked the screen and role game with Paul all night as if they were daily dance partners, rather than last minute substitutes. When Phoenix made their move during the final period, each player best represented this with and-one finishes at the basket, of course initiated by Paul.

They also brought some much needed defensive ferocity as a well. Kaminsky tallied a career-high four steals, and both players finished with a blocked shot. They also helped the Suns win the paint battle over New Orleans by a 50-42 score, which almost nobody expected to occur without Ayton.

The Suns want their starting center back as fast as possible, but they must feel more trustful toward McGee and Kaminsky after their combined contributions tonight.
