Phoenix Suns Players with Something to Prove: Frank Kaminsky
After averaging a career low 6.6 points and just 4.0 rebounds per game last season, it came as a shocker when the Suns decided to re-sign Frank Kaminsky this summer. The seven-footer also struggled mightily at the defense end during the NBA Finals, proving his inability to back up Deandre Ayton effectively.
To be fair, during that Finals series, Kaminsky found himself stuck guarding Giannis Antetokounmpo, which remains a tall task for anyone. But still, playing against the league’s best is something you need to deal with when you aspire to win a title. So with that understood, Kaminsky needs to improve if he wants to remain a Sun.
As a former college standout still struggling to live up to his hype, Kaminsky represents a player not just to trying stay with the Suns, but also to stay within the NBA. The deal he signed this summer came as a one year, veteran’s minimum offer, which naturally reflects very little commitment to him from Phoenix’s front office.
For what its worth, that might motivate Kaminsky a bit more this season, and push him into his best campaign yet. If that indeed occurs and “Frank the Tank” ends up playing as well as, or even better than JaVale McGee, then he likely secures himself another deal to stay afloat.
