Chris Paul’s poise and Deandre Ayton’s evolution into a force down low both absolutely helped transform the Phoenix Suns from a team reeking with mediocrity, into an NBA Finals team last year. But still deep down, everyone knows Devin Booker resembles this team’s “backbone” more than anyone.

Enjoying his sixth season as a Sun last year, Booker played a team-high 40.4 minutes per game during the postseason and lead his team as a scorer as well with 27.9 points per contest. He even came through with three 40-point performances, the most by a player under 25-years-old since Rick Barry in 1967.

But the Suns came up short against the Milwaukee Bucks despite his exhaustive efforts. Giannis Antetokounmpo turned in his own playoff run for the ages while doing so, silencing Phoenix after six games.

Only a few weeks removed from their demise, the Suns already need to begin prepping themselves for the 2021-22 season—as they look to defend their Western Conference throne. They jumped out to a solid start acquiring sharp-shooter Landry Shamet hours before the NBA Draft last week, but more work remains undone.

Considering Booker’s position as a central pillar for the Suns, approaching free agency with his preferences in mind feels like a wise strategy to uphold. It certainly worked out last summer, when Booker almost single-handedly attracted Chris Paul to Phoenix, arguably going down as the team’s greatest offseason acquisition since re-signing Steve Nash almost 10 years ago.

His game appears quite compatible to several free agents set to hit the market this afternoon— even beyond Paul, who the team will obviously look to re-sign as well. But diving into the crowd beyond CP3, these two available players already seem like perfect matches to ally themselves with Booker and the Suns.
