Phoenix Suns Dream Offseason: The NBA Draft

Barring any trades over the next few days, the Suns will enter the NBA draft carrying only pick No. 29. Phoenix forfeited their second rounder to the Brooklyn Nets three years ago when they traded away forward Jared Dudley, throwing it into the deal as sweetener for Brooklyn who begrudgingly ate up Dudley’s contract.

Having only one opportunity to supplement their team via the 2021 Draft Class, it remains imperative that the Suns make good on it.

CBS Sports foresees Phoenix selecting either shooting guard Ziaire Williams (10.7 PPG and 4.6 RPG) from Stanford, point guard Miles McBride (15.9 PPG and 4.8 APG) from West Virginia, or center Day’Ron Sharpe (9.5 PPG and 7.6 RPG) from North Carolina with the pick. The Ringer expects the Suns to take point guard Jaden Springer (12.5 PPG and 1.3 SPG).

Williams remains a raw product who struggled more than most expected him to at the collegiate level, but still an intriguing project to develop. McBride more primarily reflects Cameron Payne, with his game centered around speed, 3-point shooting, and scrappy defense.

Sharpe quite literally embodies a block of muscle, already looking fit to play at the NBA level. Springer also defends and shoots well from outside, hitting at a 44.4 percent clip from beyond the arc last season.

Between these all potential selections, it looks like the Suns will either try and add more guard depth with Cameron Payne possibly leaving this offseason, or find a new back-up center with Dario Saric out extensively after tearing his ACL.

At this point though, the Suns represent a team looking to “win now,” making McBride seem like the best option if still available at pick No. 29 due not only to his talents, but the abundant competitiveness he displayed while at WVU.
