Phoenix Suns Superlative Stat 3: Shooting when Wide Open

Not only did the Phoenix Suns avoid closely-contested shots, they took a ton of wide-open ones. The Suns led the league in number of field goals made per game (9.8) where the defender was at least six feet away.

Essentially, the Phoenix Suns were socially distancing before it was cool.

Despite no other team in the NBA making more wide-open field goals, the Suns shot just 42.8 percent in these situations, which ranked them 11th in the league. This is one of those things fans and analysts alike say after tough losses, but in this case it is backed up by statistics:

“The Suns missed a lot of open shots today. Had they just made more of those, this game would have turned out differently.”

If the Suns can maintain this excellent shot selection next season and just bump up the number of times they make these open looks, there is no question winning basketball is on the horizon.
