Phoenix Suns Superlative Stat 5: Touch Time

In a very similar stat to number of dribbles, the Phoenix Suns led the NBA in the number of shots taken between zero and two seconds after catching the ball.

When Monty Willaims first took the reins, he talked about implementing what he called a 0.5 system. With this mindset, the player is encouraged to either shoot, pass, or drive within a half of a second of catching the ball.

Whatever criticism you might have about how this system translates to wins, there is no mistaking he successfully implemented this style of play.

The Phoenix Suns led the league in shots where the ball was held by the player less than two seconds. A ridiculously high 59.5 percent of their shots came off this quick-release. The next closest team was the Miami Heat at 55.9 percent, nearly a full four percentage points less.

The moral of these previous two stats is that Monty Williams successfully implemented his 0.5 system, and the Phoenix Suns were at their best when there was efficient ball movement. They were much less effective when they were forced into isolation basketball.
