#30 Boston Celtics: Vernon Carey Jr. | Center | Duke
If this were the 90s, Carey is a guy who would be a lottery pick, but in 2020 where the traditional center position is a dying breed, teams are hesitant to invest a high pick in someone who might not fit their playing style long term.
That being said, he is capable of making an outside shot. Even though he only took 21 3s, he made eight of them (38.1 percent), which is encouraging if you’re an NBA scout. He averaged 17.8 points and 8.8 rebounds for the Blue Devils and is a guy I would have loved to have seen on the March Madness big stage.
He struggled with fouls against stiffer competition, but he is a very solid player with a high floor and would be a good snag for Boston at #30.
The Celtics have three first-round picks in the 2020 NBA draft, and I will be shocked if they keep them all. Multiple first-round picks are the type of assets teams often leverage into quality players or higher picks.
For the purpose of this, though, I’m going to assume Boston keeps them all and with their third first-round pick, fill in Vernon Carey Jr.
