#17: Boston Celtics: RJ Hampton | Combo Guard | International
In my humble opinion, RJ Hampton is the biggest bust candidate in the 2020 draft. Hampton took the road less traveled as a top recruit out of high school, opting to play overseas instead of a college, and that makes him tough to scout.
Much of his draft stock relies on that high school ranking, where Rivals had him sixth overall in the 2019 class.
His time with the NZ Breakers was underwhelming. He had 8.8 points and 2.4 assists per game in over 20 minutes of action per game. It was his shooting that really faltered. He shot just 40 percent from the field, a dismal 29.5 percent from deep, and a paltry 67.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Whoever drafts Hampton is going off the intangibles. He is a 6’5″ athletic guard who has played at a high level at an early age. It may take a team like the Boston Celtics who don’t have an immediate need for a rookie to come in and make an impact to cultivate a player like RJ Hampton into an NBA contributor in a few years.
