The Playoffs

The Suns faced the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the playoffs and barely squeaked by, winning Game-5 of the five-game series in overtime.

When the Suns were down 0-2, Coach Westphal made a guarantee:

"“So, we’re down 0-2,” Westphal said. “I know the next question is, ‘Are you guys dead?’ No. We’re going to win the series. We’re going to win one Tuesday and the next game’s Thursday. We’re going to win there and then we’re going to come back and we will win the series on Sunday. And everybody will say what a great series it was.”"

In the series-clinching game, Kevin Johnson had 24 points and 12 assists, Barkley had 31 points and 14 rebounds, Majerle added19 points on 4/7 from deep and Oliver Miller chipped in 17 points off the bench in the 112-104 Suns win.

In the Western Conference Semi-Finals, the Suns would face the San Antonio Spurs and win the series 4-2 and punch their ticket to the conference finals. The Suns scraped by in game 6 winning 102-100 due to an all-around performance by the big 3 of Barkley, Johnson, and Majerle who combined for 64 points and had help off the bench from Tom Chambers and once again, Oliver Miller.

The Western Conference Finals would be a tough task for the Suns, as the Seattle Supersonics took them to seven games, but the Suns gave it to Seattle in Game-7 with a 13-point win to clinch their NBA Finals berth. Barkley had 44 points and 24 rebounds, and the Suns starters combined for 105 of the Suns’ 123 points.
